Like “Game of Thrones” at the time, “House of the Dragon” not only impressed the audience with its complex plots: its secondary effects and locations have also been highly praised.
What many may not know is that many of its sets are not sets built specifically for the show, but rather actual places where the actors go to film their scenes.
Such is the case of Rocadragón or Dragonstone, made more relevant in “House of the Dragon”: we tell you where it is and how you can visit it.
This is Rocradragón, from “House of the Dragon”, in real life
The place where the Dragonstone scenes in “House of the Dragon” were filmed is called San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. It is a peninsula located in the north of Spain, in the Basque Country. The nearest big city is Bilbao.
It is such a small island that its only attraction is a church at the top and you have to climb more than 200 steps to reach it. In the “House of the Dragon” series, it was digitally replaced by the imposing Targaryen castle
The chapel currently located in San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is not the original one, having been rebuilt several times after the ravages of battles and fires throughout history.
The festival of San Juan, celebrated on June 24, is a local tradition in which visitors make a pilgrimage to the hermitage.
Beyond the chapel, the landscape of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe offers spectacular views of the Cantabrian Sea and a variety of birds that can be seen in the area. The creators of “House of the Dragon” took advantage of these natural elements to recreate the home of House Targaryen in Westeros.
To get to know San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, it is best to start from Bilbao and, from there, make the road trip with your own car or truck.

Dragonstone also appeared in “Game of Thrones”
Although this place has gained special importance in “House of the Dragon”, fans of the saga will remember that this is not the first time we have seen it on screen.
In the first episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ season 7, Daenerys (played by Emilia Clarke) landed at Dragonstone accompanied by her fleet of ships and her army of Dothraki and Unsullied. This was the audience’s introduction to ‘Dragonstone’.
