Brazil closes delegation in Paris and for the first time in history will have more women

The country will have 277 athletes, of which 153 are women, equal to 55% of the total

The Brazilian delegation for the Paris 2024 Olympics is officially closed. There will be 277 athletes, including 153 women, meaning that for the first time in history, Team Brasil will have a female majority: 55% of the total.

The increase (in Tokyo it was 47%) is due to the work done between the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) and the Brazilian Confederations of Olympic Sports since the Rio 2016 Games. According to Mariana Mello, Planning and COB Sports Performance, “. having identified an opportunity for growth in women’s sports, the COB began to invest specifically in women”.

And it worked, with big female names emerging as medal favorites, such as Rebeca Andrade, Rayssa Leal, Beatriz Ferreira, and Ana Marcela Cunha. So the possibility of having more women than men on the podium is real.

However, it was team sports that secured a large number of places for women, as they qualified in football, volleyball, handball and rugby, while men only qualified in volleyball and basketball.

The Paris Games will be the first edition with gender parity for athletes, thanks to an action by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which has designated 10,500 places, 5,250 for men and 5,250 for women.

Brazil will be able to see action in 39 disciplines: Open Water, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball (Men), Boxing, Canoe Slalom, Canoe Sprint, BMX Racing Cycling, BMX Freestyle Cycling, Road Cycling, Mountain Biking, Fencing, Football (Women), Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Elastic Gymnastics, Handball (Women), Equestrian Dressage, Equestrian CCE, Equestrian Jumping, Judo, Weightlifting, Swimming, Modern Pentathlon, Rowing, Rugby (Women), Diving, Skateboarding, Surfing, Taekwondo, Tennis, Table Tennis, Archery, Shooting, Triathlon, Sailing, Volleyball, Beach Volleyball and Freestyle Wrestling.

The Paris Olympic Games will begin on July 26, opening at 2:00 p.m. Brasilia time.
