Fortaleza CEO criticizes refereeing of penalty awarded to Flamengo: “It was absurd”

This Wednesday (11), Fortaleza beat Flamengo 2-1, at the Maracanã, in the 16th round of the Brazilian championship. After the match, Marcelo Paz, CEO of Fortaleza, criticized the refereeing of the penalties in favor of the Rio team.

“Today we won, despite the refereeing. The penalty awarded to Flamengo was absurd, it was embarrassing”Paz said in a video posted on Fortaleza’s social networks.

The CEO’s main complaint was the awarding of the penalty, in the 39th minute, when Pedro infiltrated the Fortaleza area, missed the ball and fell on the pitch. On the pitch, Edina Alves reported a touch from the tricolor defense on the Flamengo striker and the penalty in favor of the home team. Upon the call, the VAR confirmed the foul found by the referee. Pedro converted the charge and tied the match for the Cariocas.

“No matter how much the referee makes a mistake on the pitch, which is a quick move, not to be missed, the VAR has the opportunity to check with different cameras, from different angles to confirm the penalty”said the CEO about the confirmation of the offer. “We travel 3,000 kilometers here to play against a strong team, in a packed stadium. I have to record this, our dissatisfaction with the very serious error of the referee on the pitch and especially of the VAR must be clear”criticized Marcelo Paz.

In his statement, Paz claims that video referee Caio Max Augusto Vieira has also refereed other Fortaleza matches and, on some occasions, made decisions on the pitch that would have harmed the Ceará team.

“And the VAR, historically, this guy brings damage to Fortaleza. Since 2019, in Itaquera, against Corinthians, 2021 against Atlético Mineiro, this year in the Copa do Nordeste classic. There are several situations in which, unfortunately, this guy tends to make mistakes against Fortaleza. So there is our record, our indignation, despite the victory,” said the CEO.
