Vale announced on Friday that it has reached a settlement with BHP in class action lawsuits in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands over the 2015 Fundão dam collapse in Mariana, MG.
According to the Brazilian mining company, this is a confidential agreement, without any admission of liability, under which the contribution action brought by BHP against Vale in relation to the UK’s claims will be withdrawn.
“The effect of the agreement is that, if it were to be concluded that BHP had any liability to the claimants in the UK, or if any liability ultimately accrued to Vale to the claimants in the Netherlands, such liability would be divided equally between BHP and Vale,” Vale said in a statement.
