The Covid-19 pandemic has hit the film industry hard and has had some complex consequences for many franchises like Marvel. And there’s one MCU film that’s been particularly affected by various delays to its theatrical release, which was originally slated for 2020.
Although theaters reopened the following year, the industry was still badly affected, and some studios resorted to decisions that sparked heated controversy. This is Disney’s case for this Marvel film, which will benefit from a digital purchase in theaters and on the Disney+ platform in July 2021 through the Premium Access program.
While the strategy paid off in its early days, the film did not survive massive piracy (losses estimated at $600 million) due to its streaming release. The lead actor and executive producer of this feature film sued Disney for breach of contract. This dispute was settled amicably, but the damage was done.
The streaming premiere of this Marvel movie in France
This unprecedented situation was about the Black Widow stand alone Dedicated to Natasha Romanoff, the heroine of The Avengers, played by Scarlett Johansson. If its simultaneous release worldwide is problematic, there is one country that has resisted this strategy: France.
Indeed, the chronology of French media breaks down the televising and streaming of a film months, or even years, after its theatrical release. Today, CANAL+ and OCS can stream movies 6 months after their theatrical release, Netflix has to wait 15 months, and Prime Video and Disney+ 17 months.
But just a few years ago, streaming platforms had to wait 36 months. Since Black Widow was released in July 2021, the film has fallen into the old media timeline. That’s why a Marvel movie has never been available on a streaming platform before. Now it’s possible after three years, as Black Widow is available for the first time on a streaming service in France.
If you missed Kate Shortland’s movie or want to watch it again, you can catch up on Disney+ because it just joined its catalog. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Widow takes place after Captain America: Civil War and tells the story of what happened to Natasha Romanoff before the events of Avengers: Infinity War.
She looks into the darkest part of her past to come up with a terrible conspiracy related to her former life. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must return to her work as a spy and the ties that were severed long before she joined the Avengers.
In this Marvel adventure, Scarlett Johansson is surrounded by quite the cast, which includes Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, Ray Winstone, Olga Kurylenko and William Hurt.
