Packages were hidden in a warehouse in the central area of the capital Sao Paulo; a man was arrested
A Federal Police and the military police of San Paolo carried out this Saturday morning, 13, the seizure of 11.8 million euros contraband cigarettes — the equivalent of 20 complete trailers. According to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, this is the largest seizure of this type of product ever recorded in the country.
The bundles were found on a property on Rua Junqueira Freire, in the central region of São Paulo, and are valued at R$6 million.
According to the state government, military police were patrolling the region and were called to a call about several people trying to break into a warehouse with an unmarked truck. However, by the time the team arrived, the gang had fled.
With the help of the federal police, the military located a man identified as the owner of the warehouse, who had been paid to receive the contraband shipment, and arrested the suspect.
The incident has been forwarded to the Federal Police, who will investigate others involved in the crime. The detained man will be released for embezzlement and smuggling. All containers have been seized for incineration.
