Brazil wins two silvers and three bronzes at Pan U20

Eight athletes represented Brazil this Saturday (13) in the U20 Pan American Wrestling Championship, all in the men’s freestyle. And the performance was very positive, with five medals won, two silver and three bronze. Paulo André Gonçalves, in the 74kg category, and Benjamin Zuckerman, in the 61kg category, achieved the second highest place on the podium. In third place were Caio Duarte Aron (57kg), Leandro Araújo (79kg) and Kyle Oliveira (97kg).

Second place

Two Brazilian fighters reached the finals of their respective categories of the Pan American U20 Wrestling Championship. In the quarterfinals, Paulo André Gonçalves defeated Peruvian Alexander Gomez by touch. He then returned to the mat and defeated Mexican Roberto Armenta, 10-0, in the semifinals. With his place in the final, the Brazilian secured a spot at the U20 World Cup in Pontevedra, Spain. In the title fight, the Brazilian athlete suffered a setback against American Ladarion Lockett, 10-0.

The other Brazilian silver medalist in the U20 Pan American wrestling was Benjamin Zuckerman. In the top eight stage, he defeated Ecuadorian Angelo Cabrera 14-4. In the semifinal, the Brazilian wrestler prevailed over Peruvian Blayne Helou, 12-2. Finally, in the fight for gold, Benjamin was defeated by American William Dekrekar, 10-0.

Bronze medal

In addition to the two silvers, Brazil won three more bronzes in the U20 Pan American Wrestling Championship. In the quarterfinals, Caio Aron lost 8-1 to Puerto Rican Ethan Rivera. With the setback, he needed to hope that his tormentor was one of the finalists to return to the repechage and be able to fight for third place. And that’s what finally happened. The Brazilian took advantage of the second opportunity and won his medal by scoring 16-4 against Peruvian Rafael Díaz.

Leandro Araújo had a similar trajectory, losing 8-0 to American Zackary Ryder in the quarterfinals. The negative result forced the Brazilian to hope that his tormentor would reach the final to have another chance at winning the repechage medal. And he was rewarded with that opportunity and did not waste it, defeating Peruvian Dário Castillo, 10-0, in the decisive fight for the bronze.

The third bronze had a different story than the previous two. Kyle Oliveira defeated Jamaican Richard Alexander in his debut, 11-1. In the second match, the Brazilian defeated Argentine Gabriel Garibaldi: 16-6. In the last challenge of Group A of the Pan American Under-20 wrestling, he defeated Peruvian Mikel Galvez by touch. In the semifinals, Kyle was defeated by Canadian Tejvir Dhinsa, 10-0. The fight for the bronze was a reunion with Garibaldi and, once again, he defeated Brazil, now, by touch.

Three off the podium

Three Brazilian fighters failed to win a medal in the U20 Pan American Wrestling Championship. Wenzo Nogueira (65 kg) and Marciel Martinez (86 kg) finished in fifth place. Wesley Barros (125 kg) finished in sixth place. The former fell by touch to American Bowen Basse in the quarterfinals. In the repechage, he lost to Puerto Rican Rafael Morales, 12-2, and said goodbye to the competition.

TWITTER,

Marciel was defeated by Canadian Roni Bal, 11-4, and also didn’t get far in the U20 Pan American Wrestling Championship. To conclude the Brazilian participation in the competition, Wesley lost in his debut, 11-0. His journey ended when he faced Mexican Nicholas Rabago, and lost to him, 11-0.
