The president once again blamed Europe’s “internal contradictions”
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Monday, in a joint statement with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, that Brazil wants to “conclude as soon as possible” a trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union that is balanced and contributes to the development of both regions.
“I explained that progress in the negotiations depends on the Europeans resolving their internal contradictions. Measures such as the carbon tax, imposed unilaterally by the European Union, could affect five of the 10 most exported Brazilian products to the Italian market,” Lula said at the Planalto Palace.
“Reducing CO2 emissions is imperative, but it should not be done on the basis of unilateral measures that will impact the lives of Brazilian producers and Italian consumers,” he added.
