Known worldwide for the series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Andy Samberg innovated on Saturday Night Live by directing digital shorts with Lonely Island
Known for acting in productions such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Palm Springs (2020), Hotel Transylvania (2012) and Hot Rod – Crazy on Wheels (2007), Andy Samberg started his career in Hollywood with Saturday Night Live (SNL), a live comedy show, but he doesn’t have fond memories of it, because he was overwhelmed and “physically broke down.”
During an interview on the talk show Hart to Heartproduced by the streaming service Peacock and presented by Kevin Hart, Samberg recalled the reasons for his departure from SNLin mid-2012.
As the artist explained, despite the success of the comedy show, the behind-the-scenes work was very intense, as he “was falling apart in my life” and could not “stand” the situation at work any longer.
“Physically, it was taking a toll on me and I got to the point where it felt like I hadn’t slept in seven years, basically,” he said (via Variety). “We were writing stuff for the Tuesday night live show all night, the read-through on Wednesday, then I was told to create a digital short, so I was writing every Thursday, and I didn’t sleep at night. I was shooting on Friday, editing all night and Saturday, so that’s basically four days a week that you don’t sleep, for seven years. So I kind of physically fell apart.”

“I was basically in charge of making the digital shorts, which I never pretended I could do without them,” he continued. “We’ve done some stuff that I’m really proud of over the last couple of years, but there’s something about the songs that I can only do with Akiva It is Jorm. That’s just the way it is, we’re just a band in that sense.”
The craziest thing about working there is when you first start, if you’re just in the shower and you have the idea that this s*** could be on TV in three days, which is the most, like, intoxicating feeling.
“They told me straight up, ‘We’d rather you stay,’ and I thought, ‘Oh, that makes it harder.’ But I thought, I think in order to get back to a sense of physical and mental health, I have to do this. So I did it, and it was a very difficult choice,” she concluded. Samberg.
