Tornado: What’s True About the Movie “Twisters”?

Tornado: What’s True About the Movie “Twisters”?

Some natural phenomena are as fascinating as they are deadly. Take the case of tornadoes and hurricanes. Although they are not common in Brazil, they occur with some frequency in other places in the world. The United States is on that list.

So much so that Hollywood made a movie about them in 1996. Twist tells the story of a group of storm chasers. Twenty-eight years later, a new feature film on the subject will premiere in July: Twisterdirected by Lee Isaac Chung.

Despite the same name (the only difference is the final “s”), the new film is neither a sequel nor a remake. It is more of a tribute. A completely original story, but inspired by the classic.

In the new film, Daisy Edgar-Jones plays a researcher who has suffered trauma related to climate disasters. Glen Powell is a social media star who gets clicks by taking photos of the biggest and worst tornadoes.

Without getting into the quality of the film, the first question I asked myself when I heard about it was: is it true? Do people actually chase tornadoes for a living? Believe me: the answer is yes.

Does “Twisters” portray reality?

Why are these phenomena rare in Brazil?

This happens for 3 main reasons: our proximity to the equator, the low temperature of the ocean waters and our mountainous landscape in several regions.

In the United States, for example, tornadoes are most common in the “Great Plains” region. This rectilinear structure favors the formation and persistence of these air columns.

Tornadoes are, in fact, violent columns of air. This powerful atmospheric phenomenon is formed when warm air rises and meets cooler air. At that moment, there is a sudden change in the speed or direction of the wind, which can spin like a top, creating a tornado.

Winds can reach 240 km/h. In the most severe cases, winds of up to 300 km/h have been recorded. What makes the phenomenon even more deadly is the fact that it drags with it almost everything it encounters. So, in addition to the high speed, it carries with it animals, houses, wood, tiles, barbed wire and everything you can imagine.

For this reason, it is advisable to seek shelter in the event of an approaching tornado. Leave it to the professionals, who you now know exist. Or just watch it at the movies.
