Lee Daniels is back and clearly in great shape! The director of Precious, Paperboy and The Butler has booked his next film for Netflix. And for the occasion, he reunites with Andra Day, the star of his Billie Holiday, A State Affair, which also earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

The director tries a new genre with The Deliverance, written by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum. The film is about a single mother (Andhra Dey) who experiences strange events in her new home. The film is presented as “A film that defies genre codes about darkness, possession and the search for a higher power.

Based on a true story

Here is the official synopsis of the film: “Ebony Jackson, a single mother plagued by demons, moves with her family to a new home for a fresh start. But strange phenomena occur and cause suspicion in child protection services, threatening to destroy the family. Ebony soon finds herself fighting for her life and the souls of her children.

It is inspired by the case of the Ammon Family Possession, also known as the “House of Demons”. This is a case of alleged demonic possession that occurred in Gary, Indiana, United States in 2011. Latoya Ammons, her mother, Rosa Campbell, and her three children reported paranormal activity at the residence. The story went public in January 2014 and garnered national attention.

The Deliverance is Daniels’ first feature film since Billie Holiday, 2021’s An Affair of State, which followed 2013’s The Butler. Lee Daniels also received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Director for Precious and co-created, executive produced, directed, and wrote the series Empire on Fox.

Casting that amazes

In addition to Andra Day, Glenn Close, Monique — Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress for Precious — Aujanou Ellis-Taylor, Demi Singleton and Tasha Smith star alongside Stranger Things’ Omar Epps and Caleb McLaughlin.

The trailer shows that Ebony’s son or daughter appears to be possessed by a demon. We don’t see the baby. We just understand. And it is not a child’s voice that comes out of this body, but an animal roar that freezes the blood. And these first pictures don’t exactly explain what role Glenn Close plays in the film.

The Fatal Liaison actor appears to transform, heavily decorated, and takes on US Southern codes. But we think he’s a family friend. Would he be the antagonist? You’ll have to wait until August 30 to find out.
