Discover the true story that inspired House of the Dragon (without dragons, of course)

The series House of the Dragon It’s a huge success. Broadcast on HBO and Max, the production is a spin-off of game of Thrones. But did you know that the story is inspired by real events? George RR Martin himself, author of the book series adapted for television, has already admitted to using elements of a great civil war of the past.

To begin, we must state the obvious. There are no dragons or mystical creatures in the events that served as the basis for the series.

The inspiration for House of the Dragon It comes from the British period known as “The Anarchy”. It has its origins in Henry I, who ruled England between the years 1100 and 1135. The monarch married Edith of Scotland, with whom he had two children: Matilda and William. The latter was considered the legitimate heir to the throne. However, he died at the age of 17.

Although Henry I had several children out of wedlock, only Matilda could be considered a legitimate heir. Two years after William’s death, Edith also died. The king then married the young Adeliza de Louvain, with whom he had no children.

Henry I repeatedly called upon his vassals to swear an oath to uphold his line of succession, naming Matilda as the rightful heir to the throne, an unprecedented occurrence in history. This is similar to King Viserys of the House of the Dragon naming Rhaenyra as his heir after the rest of his line was killed.

The difference is that while Viserys had other children with Alicent, Matilda had no brother to compete with. Even so, she did not ascend the throne of England after the death of her father, who had arranged a marriage between her and Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, as a way to strengthen the oath sworn by his vassals.

Because she was a woman, Matilda was considered incapable of ascending the throne. The crown thus passed to Stephen of Blois, cousin of the legitimate heir of England. The information comes from Smithsonian Magazine.
