Who is Usha Vance, Attorney and Wife of Trump’s Vice President

A graduate of Cambridge and Yale Universities, Usha Vance is the daughter of Indian immigrants and grew up in California.

On Monday, as J.D. Vance headed to the Republican convention to accept the party’s vice presidential nomination, speakers lined up to heap lavish praise on his credentials.

But the Ohio senator and running mate of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has already said he feels “humiliated” by his wife Usha Vance’s stellar resume.

While she doesn’t seek the political spotlight, Usha Vance, 38, has a significant influence on her husband’s career, she said.

In an interview with Fox News last month, she said, “I believe in JD and I really love him, so we’ll see what happens with our lives.”

The two met as students at Yale Law School in 2013, when they began attending a discussion group on “social decline in white America,” according to The New York Times.

The content influenced J.D. Vance’s 2016 memoir, Once Upon a Dream, about his childhood in the Rust Belt as a member of the white working class. The book was made into a 2020 film directed by Ron Howard.

J.D. Vance, 39, said he considered Usha his “Yale spirit guide” when they were classmates at that elite university.

Usha previously graduated from Yale University with a degree in history and was also a research fellow at Cambridge University, where she earned a master’s degree in modern history, according to her LinkedIn profile.

They married in 2014 and have three children: two sons, Ewan and Vivek, and a daughter, Mirabel.

Usha Vance is the daughter of Indian immigrants and was born and raised in the suburbs of San Diego, California.

He once clerked for Brett Kavanaugh, now a Supreme Court Justice on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. He then clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts. Both men are part of the conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

“Usha definitely brings me back down to earth a little bit,” Vance told The Megyn Kelly Show podcast in 2020. “And if I get a little cocky or too proud, I remind myself that she’s so much more experienced than I am.”

“People don’t realize how brilliant he is,” she added, saying he can digest a thousand-page book in a few hours.

She is the “powerful female voice on my left shoulder” guiding him, he said.

As J.D. Vance prepares for what is sure to be a grueling campaign for the White House, he may need her advice more than ever.
