With each new episode of “House of the Dragon” Season 2, we discover the true relevance of certain characters, and the one that catches the eye is Ser Alfred Broome. Find out how your decisions will affect Rhaenyra’s victory or defeat in the war for the Iron Throne.
Ser Alfred Boome and his brushes with Rhaenyra Targaryen
In the fifth chapter titled “The Regent”, we see Rhaenyra hesitating about her next move in the Dance of Dragons due to the loss of Rhaenys and Meleys, the biggest dragon she had up to that point. While discussing the situation with her council, a man who had remained silent complains about the crown prince’s “evil deeds.”
This is Ser Alfred Broome, who claims that Rhaenyra does not know how to create war strategies because she is of the “weaker sex” and her personal life interferes with her duties as a leader, which causes discomfort to the other members present. After these misogynistic comments, Rhaenyra defends herself, giving new orders to counterattack the Greens.
The show hasn’t said where it comes from and what the significance of this character is, but the book “Fire and Blood” reveals how in the original story it causes Rhaenyra to fall and lose in battle.
Who in Being Alfred Broome and what is his origin?
Ser Alfred Broome is a knight of House Broome who has served at Dragonstone since the reign of Jaehaerys and represents the old guard of Westeros. He manages to join Rhaenyra’s council thanks to his loyalty to his father Viserys I and his experience in battle.
Ser Alfred Broome betrays Rhaenyra in the books and delivers her to Aegon II.
Friction between Alfred and Rhaenyra also exists in the book and he betrays Rhaenyra after the young Targaryen chooses Ser Robert Queens as the protector of Dragonstone rather than him as she expected. With this displeasure, she decides to switch sides and supports Aegon II when he arrives with Sunfyre at said fortress to escape the hands of Rhaenyra, who had taken over King’s Landing.
Sir Alfred Broome promises to help him and be loyal to him as he offers him riches and lordship in exchange for protection. Thus, Broome participates in a coup against Robert Quince to regain control of Dragonstone. Soon after, he even attempts to kill Moondancer, Baela Targaryen’s dragon. However, he fails in the attempt.
When it looks like Rhaenyra is finally winning, she returns to Dragonstone, unaware of what had happened in her absence and that Ser Alfred Broome was no longer her ally. Convinced that she continues to support her, Broome takes her hostage and kills his men.
The knight is then responsible for taking Rhaenyra to his half-brother Aegon II, who executes her by having his dragon Sunfyre breathe fire into her, managing to burn her to death and ultimately cause the loss of the Blacks.
How does Ser Alfred Broome die in the books?
Shortly after these events, Alfred Broome remains under the king’s orders, but dies when he is pushed into the moat of the drawbridge in Maegor’s Hold, landing on the spikes, ending his participation in the Dance of Dragons.
In the show, it is still unknown if he will commit the same act of betrayal as in the books, but his arguments with Rhaenyra could be the first indication that he will follow the original story and be responsible for the downfall of the Green Council. .
