Actor revealed that, during the filming of Top Gun: Maverick, sequel to the 1986 classic, he felt his character was losing space in the story
Manny Jacintoknown for the series The Good Place (2016-2020) and The Acolyte (2024- ), revealed that he already knew he would be cut from Top Gun: Maverick, sequel to the 1986 classic starring Tom Cruise, even before the film’s premiere in 2022.
According to the actor, during the filming of the movie, he had already realized that his character, the lieutenant Billy “Fritz” Avalonewas losing space in history: “You could feel on set that the camera was focusing more on the other guys, and not spending as much time on our scenes.”told GQ.
He said that working on the film was great, and that it opened his eyes to the kind of stories he wants to tell with his work: “I got to see how this gigantic blockbuster machine works, how Tom Cruise works, and I became a small part of this big franchise”he declared.
“And the cuts also gave me fuel. At the end of the day, Tom Cruise is writing stories for Tom Cruise and it’s up to us – Asians and people of color in general – to do the same for ourselves. We can’t wait for others to do it. If we want to be a part of great stories out there, we need to make them.”he added.
