More prepared, impossible! Mateus Nunes achieved, this Saturday (20), another great result at the Junior Canoe Sprint World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The Brazilian became champion of the 1000 meters C1, the race he will compete in Paris-2024, and showed that he is ready for the Olympics. This was the second gold in the competition for the 18-year-old, who also won the 500 meters C2. In turn, Gabriel Nascimento finished in 8th place in the U23 race of the individual canoe 1000 meters.
To reach the final of the Junior World Cup in the 1000m C1, Mateus Nunes won the semifinal series, with a time of 4min22s322. Thus, the Brazilian went with morale to the category decision and did not disappoint. In the final, Mateus started behind his opponents, but recovered during the race. Thus, at the halfway point, he took the initiative and did not leave. His total time was 4’03’137, almost two seconds ahead of the Chinese Xiubiao Zhong, who won the silver. Finally, the Hungarian Mila Gyanyi completed the podium with a time of 4min07s926.

Final in C1 1000 Sub-23
Another Brazilian who qualified for the C1 1000m final, but in the under-23 category, was Gabriel Nascimento. In the semifinals, he finished second in his heat with 4:16.750, behind Czech Adam Rudolf, with 4:15.686. Also at 18, the Brazilian was the youngest athlete to make this decision.
In the decision, Gabriel made a great start and put a lot of tenacity into his initial shots, still remaining in the lead in the first 250 meters. However, the Brazilian’s gas was running out and, by the time he reached the last quarter of the race, he was already in eighth and last place. Nascimento recorded a time of 4min18s590. The big winner was the Russian Danila Verashchaka who clocked 3min57s068, while the Spaniard Pablo Crespo came in second with a time of 3min58s707. Finally, the German David Bauschke completed the podium with a time of 3’59.535.
