Internationally renowned filmmaker wants to pursue new opportunities within the market, as well as foster new talent in the industry
If Carlos Manga Jr. understands something, that something is cinema. Son of the also director Carlos Mangathe filmmaker has been breathing cinema since childhood. When he was a child, his father would set up a 35 mm projector and, on it, they would watch films of Charles Chaplinfrom Hollywood in the 1950s, by Luiz Severiano Ribeiro, founder of Grupo Severiano Ribeiro and, mainly, of Atlântida Cinematográfica, where Father Mango had started in the profession.
But not only that. Passion took Manga Jr. He began his career early, at the age of nineteen, directing commercials, at a time when productions were shown on the big screen. His talent caught the attention of Globo – one of the largest television networks in the country to this day – and he was invited to direct the soap opera vampire1991.
He stayed at the station for a few more years before moving to Los Angeles, California, and leading work not only in the United States, but also in Europe, alongside names such as Christopher Doylein Love in the Skin (2000), and John Mathesonin Gladiator (2000). Back in Brazil, he joined the Globoplay team and was responsible for international highlights such as If I Close My Eyes Now(2018-2019), Aruanas(2019-2021) and Soulless(2020-2022).
Now, months after leaving the streaming service, Manga Jr. takes your years of baggage to the INK Companywhere he began to work on several fronts of the group’s creation and artistic direction: as a director, in advertising, in Velvet; in content/entertainment in Film Academy; and in culture in the Academy of Culture Institutein addition to participating in the artistic direction of future projects and curating new talents.
“I’m a director, a filmmaker, an artistic director, a filmmaker, whatever name we use. That’s who I am. That’s my job. It’s being on set. [de filmagens]. It’s directing, it’s creating universes, it’s telling a story, being a storyteller”he says in an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone Brazil. “But I’m also going to be an artistic director. My position is not administrative, it’s not bureaucratic, not at all. It’s totally artistic.”
“Why don’t we become a big band?”
The partnership with INK Company came almost by chance, after leaving Globoplay: “Analyzing projects, between film and series scripts, there were some projects with the [CEO e produtor da INK] Paulo Schmidtfrom the Academy of Motion Pictures”remember Manga Jr..
The filmmaker went to São Paulo to talk and, after a reunion with Paulo and Maria Clara Fernandescurator of the Film Academy, the idea of combining powers came up: “We’ve always been very good friends. We’ve always talked a lot about scripts, possible scripts throughout my journey, so a friendship of many was rekindled there and we thought: ‘why don’t we become a big band?’ Since we’re talking to the Rolling Stone“jokes the filmmaker.
The idea of Manga Jr. is to take advantage of what the INK Company has to offer and add its experience to create new opportunities in the Brazilian audiovisual industry: “The INK group has the Film Academy, which takes care of entertainment, whether it’s films, series, miniseries, different formats. And it has the Culture Academy, which is very interesting, because it’s where we’re going to produce theater plays”to be continued.
“Coproduce. Coproduction. We use that word a lot too: coproduction”adds Manga Jr.in an enlightening way. “The producer is very inclusive, very open. So, [queremos] co-producing plays, possibly co-producing works with dance groups, installations. The Academy of Culture is for that. It’s for that other side. And there’s already a lot happening.”
Among the ongoing projects, in addition to local productions, are co-productions with Portugal, including a true crime about the murder of a great figure from São Paulo in the 1990s, who became known for creating a nationally successful perfume; and with Germany, which will be a work set during the Second World War.
Second Manga Jr.the international market is a goal to be achieved in its partnership with INK: “It’s a personal goal, as a director. And it’s a goal of the Film Academy, which is part of the group. To have partners [internacionais] in these co-productions. It’s a goal, it’s an objective and it’s already happening”he says.
Finally, the filmmaker also hopes to take advantage of the partnership to find and launch new talent: “I’ll be here getting my hands dirty, but there’s a limit to that. The production company is an audiovisual ecosystem, it’s a volcano of producing things. And, obviously, I have a limit to my things”he explains.
“And the other projects? We will have people that we believe in, that the production company believes in, that the group believes in. It’s a production group. We want to produce and foster talent.”he concludes.
