In the same period last year, the company had recorded a loss of R$ 249 million
OR Carrefour recorded a net profit of R$ 330 million in the second quarter of 2024 and recovered losses of R$ 249 million in the same period of 2023. Ebitda was R$ 1.609 billion, an increase of 20.2%. Net revenues were R$ 29.619 billion, an increase of 7.8%. Net revenues from in-store sales, in turn, were R$ 28.047 billion, an increase of 8.1%.
The group’s consolidated sales, which amounted to R$ 30.5 billion in the period, with a growth of 4.9% compared to the same period of 2023, were driven by same-store sales (a concept that only considers establishments that opened a year earlier and remained open in the quarter) with an increase of 7.4% in Atacadão, 2.5% in Sam’s Club and 2.3% in retail (excluding sales at gas stations).
In Atacadão, the stores of the former BIG Group transformed into the company’s wholesale banner represented 11.5% of the segment’s sales and recorded a like-for-like growth of 21.4% in the quarter, which, for the company, indicates that this group of establishments is maturing as expected.
The brand had six new stores in the quarter and one closure. In 2024, the expectation, which was 10 to 12 new stores, increased to 20, all conversions of retail stores, including 12 Carrefour hypermarkets and 8 supermarkets.
Carrefour Brasil Group Vice President of Finance Eric Alencar points out that despite a gross margin down 0.3 percentage points (pp) to 14.6%, Atacadão achieved an adjusted EBITDA margin of 6.1%, up 0.4 percentage points. For him, this is the result, among other things, of more mature converted stores.
Carrefour Retail and Bank
Retail, in turn, recorded a 0.4% decrease in sales at the same point in the food segment and a positive performance of 7.5% in the non-food segment, excluding sales at gas stations. Total turnover, however, decreased by 11.3% compared to the previous year due to the 20% reduction in sales area. In the last nine months, 11 retail stores (8 hypermarkets + 3 supermarkets) were transformed into Atacadão and Sam’s Club stores, in addition to 126 stores (16 hypermarkets + 110 supermarkets) closed. The Group also concluded the partnership to operate 15 Super Nosso supermarkets in Minas Gerais in the second quarter of 2024.
At Carrefour Bank, revenues amounted to R$ 16.6 billion in the quarter, up 13% on an annual basis. In terms of defaults, the rate of delays over 30 days reached 14.8% in the quarter, down 2.2 pp on an annual basis and -0.2 pp compared to the previous quarter. Delays over 90 days, in turn, decreased by 1.7 pp on an annual basis and increased by 0.1 pp compared to the previous quarter, reaching 12% of the total.
