Bruna Takahashi Gets Her First Olympic Victory

Brazilian Bruna Takahashi has won her first Olympic Games victory. After accumulating defeats in Rio-2016 and Tokyo-2020, the tennis player debuted with a victory in the women’s singles tournament in Paris-2024, this Sunday (28), and advanced to the second round of the competition. She defeated Nigerian Offiong Edem by 4 sets to 0 (11/8, 11/4, 13/11 and 12/10).




At 24, Bruna Takahashi is making her third Olympic appearance. She competed in Rio 2016 when she was only 16, participating only in the women’s team competition. In Tokyo-2020, she participated in the singles and team tournaments. In the two editions they played three matches and lost them all. In fact, she had not won a single set.

More mature in Paris, Bruna, world number 20, managed to impose her favoritism against the 112th in her debut and managed to win in four sets. She won the first two sets with relative ease, 11/8 and 11/4, and suffered in the third set, when she needed to save the set point, but won 13/11. In the fourth part she also had to save two set points and won 12/10.

With this victory, the Brazilian has secured the second round of the women’s individual tournament in Paris. Her next opponent will be a continental rival: the American Lily Zhang, 29th in the world ranking. The duel will take place this Monday (29), at 16:00 (Brasilia time).

This was the second Brazilian victory in table tennis in Paris-2024. The first came with Hugo Calderano, who defeated Cuban Andy Pereira in the men’s singles and advanced to the second round. Previously, Bruna herself, together with Vitor Ishiy, lost in the debut in mixed doubles, while Giulia Takahashi fell in the debut in the women’s singles.
