Then-mayor Jânio Quadros vetoed this practice in 1988, and it was only allowed again under the direction of Luiz Erundina, now a federal deputy.
Brazil won this Sunday, 28, three medals: one silver and two bronze – we Paris Olympic Games. Two podiums came with judokas Willian Lima and Larissa Pimenta, and the third with skateboarder Rayssa Lealwho placed third overall in the women’s Skate Street.
An Olympic modality of the Tokyo 2020 Games, skateboarding, which today makes the country grow in the medal table – and sweats coldly in front of the television for the expectation of good results – has also suffered in the past from vetoes and prejudices. An emblematic case of persecution of the sport occurred in the largest city in South America, in the 80s.
Brazilian skateboarder Bob Burnquist, once considered the best in the world, said in interviews that at the time it was common for skateboards to be confiscated and skateboarders to be taken to the police station.
The friction began to resolve the following year, in 1989, with the election of Luiza Erundina (PSOL-SP), now a federal deputy, as mayor of São Paulo. As soon as she took office, she allowed skateboarding in the first week of her term.
In an article by Stateon January 8 of the same year, entitled “Erundina begins to show her style”The paper notes that “the return of skateboarders to Ibirapuera Park” – along with bicycles and street vendors to Sé – was one of the “most visible” changes under the then-new management.
And our first medal at the Tokyo Olympics came from Skateboarding, with the athlete Kelvin Hoefler. Today, an Olympic sport, in the past, discriminated against and banned in Sao Paulo, that Erundina has liberated! Congratulations Kelvinho! ?? pic.twitter.com/MqcFpmgG0H

In 2021, when Brazilian skateboarder Kelvin Hoefler won the bronze medal in skateboarding at the Tokyo Olympic Games, Erundina used the networks to celebrate and remember one of the acts that inaugurated her administration.
“And our first medal at the Tokyo Olympics came precisely from skateboarding, with athlete Kelvin Hoefler. Today, an Olympic sport, in the past, discriminated against and banned in São Paulo, that Erundina has liberated! Congratulations Kelvinho!”, the MP told L’era.
This Sunday, after Rayssa’s victory, Erundina also commented on the Brazilian’s result, but in a more measured way: “Congratulations, Rayssa Leal! Bronze medal for our fairy! Long live skateboarding!”
