Every fan of Marvel Studios comics and movies was taken by surprise in the last few days, with the bombshell announcement that Robert Downey Jr. will be the actor who will play Doctor Doom, the main villain of the current saga.
Doctor Doom, also called Victor Von Doom, is the main villain of the Fantastic Four, but has already appeared in the comics as an antagonist in the Spider-Man and Iron Man stories.
Introduced in a 1962 edition of “The Fantastic Four,” Victor Von Doom is a genius scientist originally from Latveria, a fictional European country.
The infamous supervillain is also an adversary of Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four, whom he met when they were both students. Pedro Pascal has been cast as Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, and will debut as the character in the next Fantastic Four film, already scheduled to premiere in 2025.
In the comics, Von Doom is left scarred after a machine he invented explodes, prompting him to don a mask and armor. He later becomes the monarch of Latveria and seeks world domination.
Von Doom “desires power, control, and the recognition of being the best at everything,” according to a description on the official Marvel website. “Whether it’s time traveling, making deals with demons, or even teaming up with his enemies to fight a common enemy, Doom’s ultimate goal is to be in charge.” He also uses magical spells.
