After years of being in the red, Disney’s streaming business has finally turned profitable. Data released by the same company this Wednesday (7) show that services closed the last quarter with a positive margin of 47 million dollars. And when I say services (plural) I don’t just mean Disney+, but also Hulu and ESPN Plus.
Executives were very happy about the result. That’s because it’s unprecedented. Yes, for the first time since its launch, Disney streaming has closed an accounting period in the black. To give you an idea, in the same quarter last year, Disney+, ESPN Plus and Hulu recorded a loss of 512 million dollars!
In a statement, Disney CEO Bob Iger praised the Mickey Mouse company’s good times:
“This was a strong quarter for Disney, driven by strong results in our entertainment segment, both at the box office and in direct-to-consumer (DTC), as we achieved profitability in our combined streaming business for the first time and one quarter ahead of our previous guidance.”said the company boss.
The Disney box office success cited by Iger owes much to this Deadpool and Wolverine. The film has broken record after record and is on track to cross the billion mark worldwide. In 11 days, the film has already done better than Barbie AND Reverse 2.
How Disney Made Streaming Profitable
The End of Password Sharing
Internally, Disney expects this to be just the first of many positive results. There’s reason for that optimism: The company plans to tighten its ban on password sharing.
This conversation has been going on for some time, but executives now say it can no longer be postponed. The company is expected to implement this more stringent policy starting in September.
And the prospect is that this will significantly increase the profit margin. Netflix has led by example. At first, users complain a lot. But then they end up subscribing again.
It is worth noting that the changes will apply worldwide. In other words, even Brazilians who watch “no jeitinho” must abide by the new rules.
