A new hurricane has formed off the east coast of the United States


Ernesto is the third hurricane of the 2024 season in the North Atlantic basin and is expected to be short-lived.

On the afternoon of Sunday, August 18, 2024, Tropical Storm Ernesto intensified off the East Coast of the United States and became a hurricane.

According to the newsletter of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States, around midnight on Sunday 18 (Brasília), Hurricane Ernesto had sustained winds of about 130 km/h. The center of the storm was located about 700 km southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland. The hurricane was moving north/northeast at a speed of about 31 km/h.

The NHC forecast is for Ernesto to intensify slightly through Monday evening, but is expected to weaken again during Tuesday.

Ernesto is the fifth named storm of the 2024 North Atlantic Ocean basin hurricane season and the third system to become a hurricane.

A hurricane warning was issued for beaches along the East Coast of the United States and Canada earlier this week.
