Y2K | A24 Trailer Shows Teens Suffering From Deadly Y2K Bug

Y2K, a new comedy from A24, features a group of teenagers trying to survive a millennium bug with Tamagotchis and killer VCRs

What if the millennium bug had happened? This is the premise of Year 2000a new film from A24, whose trailer was revealed this Tuesday (20). The comedy and disaster film directed by Kyle Mooney (actor known for his appearances in the comedy Saturday night live) imagines an alternative and even more tragic version of the end of the century, in which the machines actually went to war against humanity.

For those who don’t remember (or are too young to have lived during that time), the millennium bug was the term given to what might have happened between the years 1999 and 2000, when a problem with the two-digit computer dating system caused widespread panic among the population.

The collective fear was that at the stroke of midnight, electronics would not be able to process the millennium change, recognizing the year 2000 as 1900 and causing a catastrophic disruption to the world economy.

Thanks to the millions of dollars spent on updating the systems, however, there were almost no interruptions at the beginning of that millennium. This, however, did not prevent the term from becoming popular or from recalling the sensation caused by the impending “machine revolt”.

Between Tamagotchis and Killer VCRs

But what if the Millennium bug had occurred? And worse: not only did it affect the dates of computers, but it also turned them into killing machines ready to wipe out humanity?

It is in this scenario of destruction that it takes place Year 2000title featuring Eli, a boy who decides to attend a New Year’s Eve party to be close to Laura, the girl he dreams of kissing, and finds himself attacked by Tamagotchis, VCRs and other old devices.

In an attempt to survive and try to solve the problem, he joins Laura and other friends on an adventure through the city. A mission that has everything to be terribly fun and retro.

In addition to Jaeden Martell (It – The Thing) as Eli and Rachel Zegler (The Hunger Games – The Song of Birds and Serpents) in the role of Laura, the film also features actors Julian Dennison (Christmas Chronicles: Part 2) and Lachlan Watson (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) like some of the friends who accompany them on this journey.

Launched in March at South by Southwest, Year 2000 will hit U.S. theaters on December 6.
