Iranian President Raisi’s Helicopter Crash Was Caused by Bad Weather, Fars Says

The helicopter crash that killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in May was caused by bad weather and the plane’s inability to support the weight it was carrying, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Wednesday, citing security sources familiar with the final outcome of the investigation.

A preliminary report by the Iranian military said in May that at that point no evidence of an attack or any intent in the disaster had been found.

“The investigation into the case of the crash of Ayatollah Raisi’s helicopter has been completed… There is absolute certainty that what happened was an accident,” an anonymous security source told Fars.

According to the report, the causes of the accident were two: bad weather, which did not allow the flight, and the weight carried by the helicopter, which caused the crash on the mountain.

The investigation revealed that the helicopter was carrying two more people than the capacity required by safety protocols, the source told Fars.

Raisi, a hardliner and potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, died in the crash in mountainous terrain near the border with Azerbaijan.
