For those who love fighting in movies, the John Wick franchise has become a reference in this field. At the helm of the various films – four in total, so far – we find Chad Stahelski, one of Hollywood’s most influential stuntmen. In the title role, Keanu Reeves, a great regular in the genre, gives it his all.
Such is the case in John Wick – Chapter 4, which pushes the boundaries of action even further. This opus, which now joins the Prime Video catalog, is set in the French capital, with each section setting as crazy as the next. A particularly crazy scene takes place between them in Montmartre, on the steps leading up to the Sacre-Coeur.
The sequence that occurs at the end of the film is all the more impressive because it takes 224 steps. Such a moment of bravery required seven nights of filming – an abnormally long time for an action scene.
Inspired by Buster Keaton
Visually, this moment is one of the most moving. Director Chad Stahelski was inspired by the famous Buster Keaton, the undisputed stunt genius of the silent film era. “We wanted to do a last series that was a little bit funny, different, to make the audience laugh“, he explained to AlloCiné.
Since such choreography cannot be improvised, part of the staircase in the studio has been reconstructed to perform “prévis”, a term that defines rehearsals to calculate the timing, the movements and to determine what is possible and what is not.
Obviously, the scene is a risk for Keanu Reeves. In order to avoid any danger – and therefore to completely stop filming – the actor was named by the Frenchman Vincent Bouillon. “For me, stairs are one of the most dangerous stunts because we learn to cascade, but we know that every edge of the step will hit us.“, he admits.
Also, during the filming of this scene, the Frenchman hit his head on one of the steps. “I was a bit taken aback, but that’s what makes this movie so real.“
