Bear That Killed Italian in 2023 Will Be Moved to Germany

The animal is currently being held in an area of Trento

The bear JJ4, who attacked and killed the Italian Andrea Papi in a forest in Trentino-Alto Adige in 2023, will be transferred to Germany.

Currently held in an Alpine wildlife recovery center in Trento, the bear will be taken to a large park that houses large animals located in the Black Forest mountain range.

Site officials said they will build an “appropriate” fence so that JJ4 does not obstruct visitors to the site.

“Once again, the seriousness and transparency of the decisions taken in recent months by the Autonomous Province of Trento are confirmed. We are waiting for the Black Forest Park to complete the actions for the reception of JJ4”, said forestry councilor Roberto Failoni.

Bear attacks in protected areas in the region have sparked considerable controversy in Italy. Months after Papi’s death, the court saved JJ4 by suspending his slaughter, a measure widely criticized by NGOs working for animals.
