The jersey worn by Babe Ruth, widely considered the greatest baseball player of all time, during Game 3 of the 1932 World Series became the most expensive item at a sports memorabilia auction when it sold for a record $24.12 million on Saturday.
The jersey, worn when Ruth of the New York Yankees took aim before hitting a home run against Charlie Root of the Chicago Cubs, surpassed the previous record set by a Michael Jordan jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals, which sold for $10.1 million in 2022.
“If it were a work of art, it would be like buying the Mona Lisa,” said Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions at Heritage Auctions.
“We know he pointed, but we don’t know if he was pointing at the pitcher, if he was pointing at the Cubs players in the dugout, or if he was throwing. But that mystery is why we’re still talking about this almost 100 years ago,” Ivy added.
The Yankees won the series 7–5, Ruth’s seventh and final World Series title.
