Suspect arrested in explosion near synagogue in France

French police arrested on Sunday morning (25) a suspect for involvement in the explosion near a synagogue in the city of La Grande-Motte, in the south of the country.

According to sources close to the investigation, he is a 33-year-old Algerian in good condition, injured in a shootout against police officers. His health condition is not critical.

“The alleged perpetrator of the synagogue attack has been arrested. Thanks to the police, and especially to the RAID, which intervened with great professionalism despite its blows,” Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on the social network X, referring to an elite unit of the National Police.

The man was seen around 11:30 pm (local time) on Saturday (24) on the top floor of an apartment in Nîmes. Subsequently, the special police forces and the elite RAID service intervened and captured him.

French President Emmanuel Macron had already promised that “the perpetrator of this terrorist act” would be arrested. “The fight against anti-Semitism is a battle that is ongoing at all times,” he said.

The arrest comes after an explosion outside a synagogue injured a police officer, in the latest in a series of incidents in recent months targeting France’s Jewish community.

“Our thoughts are with the congregation of the Grande-Motte synagogue and with all the Jews of our country. Everything is being done to find the perpetrator of this terrorist act and protect places of worship,” concluded Macron.
