Since its premiere, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has been a success not only for its irreverent humor but also for having one of the most exciting crossovers in the history of the UMC (Marvel Cinematographic Universe) alongside Hugh Jackman in his iconic role as Wolverine.
Throughout the time that the film has been in theaters, strange or hidden events have not stopped popping up and surprising fans, from Easter eggs to the appearance of Ryan Reynolds’ children in the film. While we may think we already know everything about this production, the truth is that there are still details that have not come to light, such as the fact that the film was originally going to have a different name.
That’s what “Deadpool 3” was originally going to be called.
Few know that “Deadpool & Wolverine” almost got a completely different title. This change happened because of a leak and the public’s unexpected response when they learned this small but important secret.
During the promotional tour, Ryan Reynolds, who in addition to the role of Deadpool, was also one of the writers and producers, shared an anecdote that surprised many.
In an interview on the program “Jimmy Kimmel! Live’, the actor revealed that the original title of the film was none other than ‘Deadpool & Friend’. According to Reynlds, this title choice reflected the unique dynamic between Deadpool and Wolverine, but that all changed when, on the eve of the Super Bowl, information leaked online.
The response from fans of the mercenary mouth was not so favorable, in fact it was so negative that Reynolds and his team decided to take action on the matter.
The negative reaction to the leak was immediate, and Ryan Reynolds soon convinced the producers that a title change was necessary, despite the fact that marketing advances had already begun under the name “Deadpool & Friend”.
According to Ryan himself, the pressure to keep the original title was high, but he was convinced that an adaptation was necessary to ensure the film’s success. Along with director Shawn Levy, Reynolds took on the difficult task of convincing Disney and Marvel Studios executives to make a last-minute change.
Deapool’s interpreter recounted how he and Levy, who was in the editing room, spent hours discussing the meaning of the title.
In addition to the title, they also changed the story of ‘Deadpool 3’
But that wasn’t the only change the film underwent in its evolution. Before Marvel Studios acquired the rights to Deadpool through the purchase of 20th Century Fox, there was a completely different version of ‘Deadpool 3’.
According to Karan Soni, the actor who plays taxi driver Dopinder in the films, the original script for the third installment took place around Christmas and followed Deadpool on a crazy mission to save the holiday.
This version also featured Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, but with Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the plot underwent a radical transformation.
Deadpool fans feared that by integrating the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would lose its sarcastic and irreverent tone, but Ryan Reynolds’ active involvement in the production ensured that the original spirit of the character remained intact.
Marvel Studios, aware of Deadpool’s success in his first two installments, gave Reynolds considerable creative freedom, resulting in a film that respects the essence of the character while expanding his universe.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” was not only one of the most exciting films of the year, but it was also a testament to how creativity, humor and irreverence were part of resounding cinematic success.
Without a doubt, the film has all the tools to become a classic in the superhero genre.
