Club profiles send messages of support to family and friends of athlete admitted to Albert Einstein Hospital




The world of football is sadder this Tuesday (27). The Uruguayan defender Juan Izquierdo, of Nacional-URU, died in Sao Paulo. The athlete had been hospitalized since he felt ill during a match of the Libertadores.

Sao Paulo, Nacional’s opponent in the continental competition, was one of the first to express condolences to the defender, the Uruguayan club and his family.

“We are living days of prayer, unity and hope, and today we are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Juan Izquierdo, Nacional player. Our condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, Nacional fans and all the Uruguayan people in this moment of grief. A sad day for football. Rest in peace, Juan,” wrote the Morumbi club.

Nacional announced the player’s death

However, the 27-year-old player had been hospitalized at the Albert Einstein Hospital since Thursday. He fell ill during the match between Sao Paulo and Nacional, for the Conmebol Libertadores, at the Morumbis, and suffered a cardiac arrest after leaving the stadium. His death was announced by Nacional on a social network late Tuesday night.

Peñarol, Nacional’s great rival in Uruguay, and Conmebol (South American Football Confederation) posted on social media expressing regret over the incident.
