Creator compares “The Boys” spin-off with “Euphoria”: “I don’t know if it’s that dark”

“The Boys” showrunner Eric Kripke commented on the upcoming series spin-off, called “Varsity”, comparing it to HBO’s “Euphoria”.

Actor Patrick Schwarzenegger made the comparison between the spin-off “The Boys Presents: Varsity” and the HBO series “Euphoria” on the Just For Variety podcast. There, he said that the new production can be defined as “Euphoria meets superheroes”. Now, Eric Kripke, showrunner and creator of “The Boys”, has partially accepted this in an interview with Variety.

“It’s about psychologically complicated kids getting into trouble, so in that sense it’s like ‘Euphoria,'” Kripke said. “But frankly, I don’t know if it’s that dark. Euphoria is capable of being darker than The Boys cinematic universe. They don’t use heroin in school hallways, for example. But I hope we’re capturing something real about what it’s like to be young in this super saturated media landscape we live in. “

“The Boys Presents: Varsity”, like “Euphoria”, will follow a group of young people who test their limits. However, in “Varsity” we have young people with super powers who are being trained to become the superheroes of the future. Another comparison of the project is with the “Hunger Games” franchise.

The Brazilian Marco Pigossi is in the cast of the series, where a character called Dr. Cardosa will live. In addition to him, we will have in the cast Patrick Schwarzenegger as the Golden Boy, Sean Patrick Thomas as Polarity, as well as London Thor and Chance Perdomo.

“Euphoria” has 2 seasons available on HBO Max, which show a group of young people struggling with issues such as drugs, sex, identity research, trauma, social media behavior and friendship.

Crossover between Varsity and The Boys?

talking to the magazine DeadlineEric Kripke provided more relevant information on the spin-off series “The Boys Presents: Varsity”, where he confirmed that there will be a crossover between the two series and one will influence the other.

“There is definitely going to be a crossover and we’re doing our best to create a universe where some of the storyline from Season 3 flows into Varsity,” said Kripke. “There is a presidential campaign in the background this season and some school stuff in reaction to the events of The Boys. And there are also some new spin-off storylines that we will have to reprise in the fourth season.

While this is an interesting confirmation, this had already been envisioned, as Kripke confirmed that the original cast members will be making cameos in the spin-off.

For now, “The Boys Presents: Varsity” doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet. On Amazon Prime Video, the three seasons of the main series “The Boys” are available.
