For several years, Disney has been revisiting its great animated classics, turning them into live-action films, from Alice in Wonderland to Cinderella, including The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Mulan and soon Snow White.
Naturally, Disney fans wondered if the big-name firm was going to do the same with Pixar’s creations. Will we see live-action adaptations of Toy Story, The Incredibles, or Ratatouille in the future?
Ratatouille live?
Indeed, this latest feature film has been the subject of constant Internet rumors. Disney and Pixar are reportedly considering a live-action remake starring Josh O’Connor as Remy. The legendary Pete Docter, to whom we owe Monsters & Co, up there or vice versa, brought up the topic in an interview time.
“We’re not going to do that, no. I might be criticized for what I’m about to say, but I’m a bit worried about the fashion for live-action adaptations. I like making original movies that are unique in their own way. Remakes aren’t very interesting to me personally.”Pixar’s creative director responded.
Also, making a live-action movie with rats would be really hard, we make these movies because they respect the rules that only work in animation.Pete Docter continued about ratatouille before moving on to the example above.
Too hard in live action?
“If you see a person in a house floating, flying in the air, your brain will start asking questions: “No, but wait: houses are very heavy. How do they make the bubbles rise like that?” Then when it’s an animated character in the same house, it works, you agree with the idea that we build in animation, it’s not so easy to transcribe.– says the director.
For now, we won’t be seeing any live-action remakes of Pixar’s works, and that’s totally fine! Note that Minions creator Chris Reno agrees with his Pixar counterpart.
“For me, that’s what defines the world Minionsis that it is animated; This allows us to do the things we do, like lock a minion in a trade or explode Gru when he attacks a vector. These are very cartoonish ideas. I think it’s going to be a different thing if we do a live-action version. Personally, I don’t find it very attractive.”He pointed to the FilmHounds microphone.
Meanwhile, in terms of adaptations of Disney classics, Mufasa will arrive on December 18th and Snow White will arrive on March 19th, 2025. The live-action Moana movie is also slated for a July 8, 2026 release.
