Rated 1.5 out of 5 This is Mark Wahlberg’s worst movie ever… but it’s also the first to star Philip Catherine!

A few days ago we talked about Mark Wahlberg’s best movie. Rated 4.4 out of 5, Martin Scorsese’s The Departed noticeably allowed Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon to steal the spotlight in this remake of the Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs.

But after exploring the best of Mark Wahlberg’s career, now it’s time to focus on the worst. And we must admit: the American actor appeared not only in masterpieces.

While his latest Netflix feature The Union has an average rating of just 2.2 out of 5, other films have fared even worse. And this is especially true of the thriller The Truth About Charlie, released in 2002 (only 1.6 out of 5 according to AlloCiné’s Internet user ratings).

Philip Catherine’s first film

However, this film, directed by the highly respected Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs), is set primarily in Paris and takes the form of a modern remake of Charade, starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

While the two main roles of this new version have been assigned Mark Wahlberg Filmed in the capital and the Paris region, the film’s cast includes many French personalities and Thandiwe Newton.

Thus, real legends emerge, especially Charles Aznour, Agnes Varda and Anna Karina. But more unlikely personalities are also in the credits of the film, such as the members of the Saïan Supa Crew (in the title role), or even a certain Philip Catherine.

He, who took the world by storm after appearing at the opening ceremony in Paris 2024, plays a fan of Anna Karina (who, in turn, appears as herself). Appearing on the screen for only a few seconds, but this is really the first role of the singer mustache in the cinema.

The remake is also intended as a tribute

The Truth About Charlie was conceived as a remake of Charade, but also as a tribute to French New Wave films. Nothing really works in this feature film, and we can’t say that the actors are giving the best performances of their careers.

A true artistic fiasco, along with a commercial failure, The Truth About Charlie has since slipped into collective oblivion. Without affecting the respective careers of Mark Wahlberg (starring in the world’s number 1 movie on Netflix, The Union) and Philippe Caterin (after being awarded a César for his role in Le Grand Bain).

The Truth About Charlie is available for purchase and rental on most video-on-demand platforms.
