Tite explains Flamengo’s work on defensive aerial ball against Bahia: ‘There was an adjustment’

Rubro-Negro had suffered from goals from crosses in the last matches

Flamengo coach Tite celebrated the team’s performance in defensive aerial ball against Bahia this Wednesday (29), in the first match of the quarter-finals of the Copa do Brasil. In a press conference after the duel at the Arena Fonte Nova, the coach admitted that he had made changes to the marking. The issue was a concern for Rubro-Negro, who has conceded goals from crosses in recent matches.

– Yes, we observe (the defensive aerial ball) and there have been adjustments, yes. No one hides behind the responsibilities, the team has been excellent on the dead balls and aerial balls front. Yes, there has been an adjustment – the coach commented after the victory.

The coach was also asked about Flamengo’s attitude in the game, with less possession, but pressure on the offensive pitch at the start of the game. Tite said that, although the team sometimes adopts a more defensive position, this will not cause the team to “collapse” on the pitch.

– If you want to defend yourself, you are closer to losing. Our proposal is to play the same way, with three pressures wherever the ball is. Otherwise you will lose. I will not make the team cower. It can be (defensive) in a game circumstance. In the second half we were better, we took possession of the ball, we managed to score more, we were at the mercy of the second goal, the team that needs the score must open up and give spaces – said coach Rubro-Negro.

Flamengo beat Bahia 1-0 this Wednesday (28), at the Arena Fonte Nova, in the first match of the quarter-finals of the Copa do Brasil. The only goal of the duel was scored by Bruno Henrique, with a header, in the second half. The return match will take place on September 12 (Thursday), at the Maracanã.
