Golden day for Brazil at the South American Adult Fencing Championships. In Lima, the capital of Peru, the women’s sabre team demonstrated above all their talent and won the gold medal. In the individual event, the country also climbed onto the podium with Bruno Pekelman and Henrique Garrigós (silver and bronze respectively in men’s sabre) and with Marcela Silva (bronze in women’s épée).
The Brazilian sabre team demonstrated the strength that the weapon currently has in women’s competition at the continental level (Luana Pekelman is a two-time individual champion). Starting their participation in the semifinal stage of the tournament, Brazil debuted with a 45-20 victory over the hosts, Peru, to secure a place in the final against Chile.
In the title match, it was better for the Brazilians. Always at the top of the rankings, the team triumphed with a score of 45-38 and secured the gold medal, climbing to the top step of the podium. The South American champions were Luana Pekelman, Karina Trois, Pietra Chierighini and Luiza Lee.
Silver and bronze in men’s sabre
In the men’s sabre, six Brazilians took part in the contest. José Santos was eliminated in the round of 32, while Felipe Bento and Érico Patto said goodbye in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, it was Enrico Pezzi’s turn to abandon the tournament. In the semifinal stage, Bruno Pekelman and Henrique Garrigós advanced.
Pekelman and Garrigós faced each other in one of the semifinals, renewing a long-standing Brazilian rivalry. This would ensure the final for a Brazilian fencer. After a tight duel, Bruno Pekelman won 15-13, reaching the final and leaving the bronze to Henrique Garrigós.
Then, in the decider, Bruno Pekelman was defeated 15-11 by Argentine Tomas Macri, winning the silver medal. Enrico Pezzi finished in 5th place, Felipe Bento in 12th, Érico Patto in 14th and José Santos in 22nd.

Thus, only Marcela Silva advanced to the semifinal stage, guaranteeing herself a medal.
