At least 60 people were present on site, where basic food baskets were being distributed; the collapse will be investigated
The roof of the Morro da Conceição Sanctuary, in the North Zone of Recife (PE), collapsed this Friday afternoon (30). The distribution of basic food baskets was carried out on site. According to the city council, the accident caused the death of two men and the injury of at least 22 people.
There is still information about the health status of the injured. The rescued people were taken to the Emergency Therapy Unit (UPA) of Nova Descoberta and to the Hospital da Restauração (HR), in the Derby neighborhood.
About 70 people were in the church when the roof collapsed. The cause of the collapse is still being investigated. According to a post on the shrine’s page, the church underwent solar panels on the roof six days ago.
32 firefighters intervened at the scene of the accident and 15 police officers were also summoned. In addition, teams from the Mobile Emergency Service (SAMU) and Civil Protection were mobilized. The Recife municipality declared three days of mourning.
The lieutenant governor of the state, Priscilla Krause (Citizenship) went to the scene of the accident. “This first moment is to take care of these people. All the assistance they need and then we will take care of the sanctuary. This sanctuary is a symbol for Recife, a symbol for Pernambuco. […] As soon as the Civil Protection and the Fire Brigade free, […] The inspection begins to rebuild the sanctuary, also because the countdown of 100 days towards the Morro festival has begun”he said.

The President Lula wrote a post on X about what happened. “It is with great sadness that I learned of the news of the two deaths and dozens of injuries, some in serious condition, that occurred in the Sanctuary of Morro da Conceição, in the North Zone of Recife. A tragedy. My solidarity with the victims, their families, friends and the city of Recife at this time”he wrote.
Likewise, the governor of Pernambuco, Rachel Lyra The (PSDB) also expressed its opinion with a note. “I just learned of the collapse of the roof of the Sanctuary of Morro da Conceição, in Recife. I am in Sertão, for administrative reasons, but we have already activated our security teams for the rescue and immediate assistance to the victims. May God and Our Lady of Conceição console everyone”.
