Joachim Trier is a distant relative of the controversial Lars von Trier
This Sunday, 31st, Oslo, 31 August (2011) completes 13 years since its release. The second film in the trilogy Oslo, from the Norwegian director Joachim Trierexplores the themes of addiction and loneliness.
The surname of Joachim may remind you of another very famous — and probably more controversial — director: Lars von Trier. They are distant cousins, but one has no influence on the other’s work, it is worth clarifying.
Discover the trilogy that can be considered more melancholic than the Melancholy (2011) of Lars von Trier:
Starting Over (2006)
Two best friends aspire to a career as writers. Although there is no competition, while Phillip (Anders Danielsen Lie) manages to publish his book, Erik (Espen Klouman Høiner — an actor who, curiously, was born on August 31st) seems to experience failure when his manuscript is rejected by the publisher.
However, when the character of Anders is hit by a crisis, that of Espen finally publishes Prosopopoeia. Amidst their professional ambitions, the two face romantic dilemmas. The possibilities for the future are a great concern for one of them, while the other revisits the past. Start Over has a dramatic narrative with a comedic feel.
Oslo, 31 August (2011)
Anders, played by the actor of the same name, leaves rehab for a day and tries to reconnect with his friends and family. The character’s efforts to stay sober and get his life back on track, however, are not appreciated by the people he visits. After so many attempts to get back on track, Anders’ social circle no longer gives him credibility. The young man’s hopes are dwindling as he defies sobriety.
The film is a remake of Thirty Years Tonight (1963)of Louis Malle.
The Worst Person in the World (2021)
Julie, played by Renate Reinsveis turning 30. Age is not portrayed as synonymous with absolute maturity, since Julie finds more uncertainties than certainties in her life. From a medical student, she becomes a clerk in a bookstore. Julie also faces the indecision between betting on a romance with an older and successful cartoonist or on a passion with a barista who is as impulsive as she is. This is yet another path offered by Trier for your main character to find himself.
