On Monday (2), the State Department of Consumer Protection and Defense (Procon) of Paraná initiated an action against Netflix to end the password sharing fees applied by the company. As published by F5of Folha, the organization denounces the measure as illegal and abusive towards the platform’s subscribers.
The case is pending in the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais and has been combined with a R$ 11 million fine imposed in July by the state Procon on Netflix, for the same reason. The company began implementing the measure last year and, here in Brazil, the restriction went into effect in May. Currently, subscribers must pay a monthly fee of R$ 12.90 per share.
Max and Disney+ also want to end password sharing
Despite the controversy, Netflix is not alone in adopting the measure: following in the footsteps of the streaming giant, Max and Disney+ have also announced that they will end password sharing on the platforms.

In the case of Max, the information was officially confirmed by JB Perrette, global president of streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery, in March. The strategy was motivated by the platform’s loss of $1 million in the last quarter of last year and is expected to begin implementation in 2024.
As for Disney+, password sharing is set to end for all subscribers in September. Additionally, the company also announced that Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ subscription prices will increase.
