Brazilian Scientists Investigate Deep Earthquakes in Amazon

The main objective is to determine the detailed seismic structure of the Nazca plate beneath the western Amazon.

Summary

Brazilian researchers led by UFRN are studying the existence of deep earthquakes in western Amazonia, in collaboration with the National Observatory and CNPq.

A group of Brazilian researchers, led by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), is investigating the existence of earthquakes deep in the western Amazon.

The initiative relies on the collaboration of the National Observatory (ON), which provides equipment and expertise in the field of seismology, and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).

The central objective of the research is to understand the geological structure of the Nazca plate, located beneath the area, as well as to discover the mechanisms that cause earthquakes at depths between 550 and 650 kilometers.

Although it is less frequent and intense than earthquakes surface, these seismic events can provide valuable information about the Earth’s interior.

Studies

To make the investigation possible, scientists installed a network of seismographs in various locations in the Amazon region.

Seismographs are instruments that capture ground vibrations caused by earthquakes, allowing researchers to analyze the propagation of seismic waves and build three-dimensional models of the Earth’s internal structure.

The data collected by this network will also be used to improve earthquake early warning systems in the area, for the benefit of the population and public managers.
