Former Monaco captain and France striker Wissam Ben Yedder was taken into police custody last weekend for “sexual assault while intoxicated,” according to the newspaper “L’Équipe.”
The 34-year-old striker was arrested after being reported by a 23-year-old woman for “sexual violence”. The crime allegedly took place inside the player’s car between Friday and Saturday, in the Alpes-Maritimes region, where the athlete lives. According to the newspaper, he was stopped by the police while he was drunk.
He left police custody last Sunday and was issued an immediate summons to appear in court on October 15. Ben Yedder is charged with the offences of “sexual assault whilst obviously intoxicated, refusal to comply and driving under the influence of alcohol”.
The Prosecutor’s Office even requested the player’s preventive detention and attempted to appeal the first court decision that released him. However, Wissam was placed under strict surveillance and is prohibited from leaving the Alpes-Maritimes region, going out between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., attending clubs or parties, and not being able to contact the victim. He is also required to undergo medical treatment twice a week.
This is not the first time the player has been involved in such incidents. Last year, Ben Yedder and his brother were accused by the Nice city prosecutor of rape and sexual assault on two young women aged 19 and 20. He was placed under judicial control and paid a fine of 900,000 euros.
Ben Yedder joined Monaco in the 2019/20 season and remained there until 2023/24, since then he has been without a club. During this time, he became captain of the Principality team, played 201 official matches for the team during this period, scored 118 goals and provided 28 assists. In his first season, he scored 18 goals and was the top scorer in the French championship together with Mbappé. In addition, he still has 19 appearances for France.
