The three institutions from São Paulo are in the best positions among the 18 Brazilian institutions listed; USP ranked 146th
Three universities in São Paulo linked to the Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation of the State of São Paulo are among the best in the world in the Shanghai 2024 ranking. USP (University of São Paulo), Unesp (Universidade Estadual Paulista) and Unicamp (Universidade Estadual de Campinas) appear in the best positions among the 18 Brazilian institutions included in the ranking, together with UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul).
USP is the first Brazilian to appear in the ranking, at position 146 out of the thousand universities in the world listed. Next in line are Unesp (442nd), UFRGS (457th) and Unicamp (465th). The Academic Ranking of World Universities 2024 (ARWU), popularly known as the Shanghai Ranking, establishes the ranking taking into account the quality of education based on the number of graduates (alumni) awarded the Nobel Prize or the Fields Medal and, also, the quality of the institution based on professors who have received these same medals or who are highly referenced in academic research.
Other aspects considered are related to research impact, measured by publications in the journals Nature and Science and articles indexed in the Science Citation Index Extended and the Social Science Citation Index, among other criteria. The top five universities in the ranking are Harvard, Stanford, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and California-Berkeley, all in the United States. The Shanghai ranking was first published in 2003 and has been updated annually since then.
