His most iconic film role is that of Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men saga. But if there’s one role that suits him even better, it’s undoubtedly that of Jean-Luc Picard. The English actor played the hero of the Star Trek universe in seven seasons of the series The Next Generation, and then in four full-length films.
Patrick Stewart’s last appearance as Jean-Luc Picard was in the Star Trek film Nemesis (2002). A bittersweet memory of the latter, the failure of the tenth feature film in the saga ended hopes for an eleventh installment (a reboot of the franchise would finally see the light of day a few years later under Abrams).
Patrick Stewart is back in good company
Almost twenty years after the release of Nemesis, Jean-Luc Picard was able to bring back a new Star Trek series, simply titled Picard. Created by the same team as the Star Trek Discovery series (although the two programs do not run simultaneously), this new production serves as a direct continuation of the series The Next Generation.
Thus, all the characters of the cult series appeared with Patrick Stewart in Picard: without Jonathan Frakes (William Riker), Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher), Levar Burton (Geordie La Forge), Whoopi Goldberg (Guinan) and Michael Dorn (Worf). Forget the of course iconic Brent Spinner (data).
Is there a season 4 planned?
The Picard series was a huge success, allowing a total of three seasons to see the light of day. Patrick Stewart has also said that he is willing to return for more seasons, provided the story is interesting enough. But with Season 3 offering a conclusion worthy of the name, continuing the adventure doesn’t seem to be on the agenda.
The peculiarity of Star Trek Picard is that it was able to be a true continuation of the original series, while adapting it to the codes of modern science fiction. As such, the series offered an ideal entry point to the public who wanted to explore the world of the franchise. The series also proved that despite his past 80 years, Patrick Stewart has retained all his stature at the helm of the intergalactic crew of the Enterprise.
All three seasons of Star Trek Picard will leave Prime Video on September 30.
