Journalists Locked In and Falling Down Stairs: Find Out What Happened Behind the Scenes of the TV Cultura Debate After the Wheelchair

After the rival’s provocation, Datena attacked Marçal; the presenter was expelled from the debate and the PRTB candidate was hospitalized

The fifth debate between the candidates for mayor of São Paulo for the 2024 elections, organized by TV Cultura, on the night of this Sunday 15, did not allow journalists to access the recording. After the arrival of the six participants –Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), José Luiz Datena (PSDB), Marina Helena (Novo), Pablo Marçal (PRTB), Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and Tabata Amaral (PSB)–, the press was taken to the basement of the B23 Theater, in the West Zone of the capital of São Paulo, to follow the clashes on television.

Initially, everything went very well. It seemed that the tightening of the rules was working. Would this be the first of five debates without clashes? And the answer came in the fourth block, when Datena attacked Marçal. After the provocation of his rival, who accused him of being a coward, the presenter took one of the debate chairs and threw it at the coach.

Immediately, everyone in the press room reacted in surprise and stood up to try to reach the theater, which is two floors above. But the door that had been open until now was closed. The security guards on site trapped the journalists underground, preventing those present from leaving the venue.

“Orders,” said one of the security guards, who was standing in front of the door. The case caused outrage among journalists, who complained a lot about the organization. Some of them even tried to use force to try to open the entrance.

The solution was to use the emergency exit, which was also blocked by security guards. The uproar in search of information about what happened and what the candidates had to say about it, caused a journalist to fall on the scales. Just a scare.

In the confusion, the military police were called and access was blocked until Datena arrived, who descended the stairs escorted by security guards and spoke to journalists for a few minutes before leaving. Candidate Pablo Marçal left in an ambulance and did not speak to the press.

Datena said she had “lost her mind,” cited her mother-in-law’s death, and reiterated that she would continue the campaign. “I could have just left the debate and gone home, which would have been much better. But, in the same way that I cry as a human reaction, this was a human reaction that I couldn’t contain,” she said.

Datena admits her mistake in attacking Marçal and mentions the death of her mother-in-law: “I lost my mind”:

Marçal’s campaign says that the influencer, who left the debate to go to the hospital, will take all possible legal measures to punish the “unjust aggression”. There is also the intention to associate the image of the PRTB candidate with that of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and former US President Donald Trump, politicians targeted by attacks during political campaigns. And, apparently, the episode will be widely used in the electoral race.
