Italian and Chinese governments discuss “reviving relations”

Tajani and Wang Wentao met this Monday in Rome

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani met this Monday (16) with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, in an “important relaunch of relations between the countries” and reiterated his government’s support for the European Union’s (EU) position on taxes on Chinese cars.

In the meeting at the Farnesina in Rome, the Italian Chancellor reiterated Italy’s “desire” to “collaborate” with China, “a country that is an interlocutor, but also a competitor on international markets”.

“I reiterated Italy’s position on car taxes, we support the EU’s position,” he said.

Tajani also underlined that Giorgia Meloni’s government is available to “collaborate with small and medium-sized businesses with very positive initiatives” that have been agreed upon and that will be reiterated during the visit of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, to Beijing, which will follow.

This is the third meeting in a year between the Italian Chancellor and Wang, after the two meetings held in Beijing in September 2023 and in Verona last April on the occasion of the XV Joint Economic Commission and the Business Dialogue Forum.

“Relations between Italy and China are going through an important phase of relaunch, with the common goal of strengthening and updating the Italy-China Global Strategic Partnership, which since 2004 has constituted the reference framework for the development of our relations”, declared Tajani.

The Deputy Prime Minister explained that “China is our first trading partner in Asia and the second among third countries, after the United States” and reiterated the need for fair access to the Chinese market and a level playing field for businesses, especially for SMEs and agri-food companies.

Among the international issues discussed were the war in Ukraine and the crisis in Gaza and the Red Sea: “I raised the issue of military supplies to Russia”, said Tajani, reiterating that “China’s collaboration is also fundamental in view of the next peace conference”.

The meeting also addressed the issue of intellectual property protection, trade in the agri-food sector and investments.

Tajani finally expressed his satisfaction to the Chinese minister for the inauguration – which took place last September 26 – of the direct air connection between Venice and Shanghai, operated by the airline “China Eastern Airlines”.
