According to experts, the move included an app update that would change the way servers connect to the internet.

In an attempt to circumvent a block imposed by Brazilian courts, billionaire Elon Musk’s social network X (formerly Twitter) has managed to make the platform accessible to users, at least for some.

The move, according to the Brazilian Association of Internet and Telecommunications Providers (Abrint), involved an application update that changed the way the platform’s servers connect to the Internet.

Instead of using direct, easily identifiable IP addresses (a unique address that identifies a device on the Internet or a local network), X started using a reverse proxy service, which makes it more difficult to track and block.

Abrint city councilor Basílio Rodríguez Perez told Correio Braziliense that “blocking has become much more difficult, much more complex, because within this service there is not only X. There is the government itself, which has websites on the same IP, the press has a website on the same IP, banks have websites on the same IP. In other words, if you block that IP, you can block half of the Internet.

But what does this mean in practice?

Imagine that X is a house with a specific address. To block access to this house, the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) has placed a sign on the door that says “No Entry”.

However, X found a way to change the address without telling anyone. Now, instead of going straight home, people can use a shortcut that leads to the same place but with a different address.

This technical change made the blocking much more complex, because in trying to block the new address, Anatel would also block other sites that use the same proxy service, such as banks, governments and large companies.

According to the news agency Reuters, a source from the Federal Court said that the blocking of the social network remains in force and that STF is checking information about some users’ X access.

Anatel, the telecommunications regulator, said it was investigating the situation, but there is no official position yet on how to proceed.

Musk’s network was blocked on August 30 after he failed to comply with a series of court orders and refused to appoint legal representation in the country.

Test

In a test carried out by Byte This morning the network remained offline. However, around 3:30 PM, the website is working normally. The timeline is full of users euphoric for the return, even if partial, of Twitter.

Among the most discussed topics online are the name of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, Liberdade Cantou and others.
