The original Speak No Evil film was released in 2022 and became one of the most acclaimed horror productions in recent years.

One of the most acclaimed horror films of recent years, Speak No Evil got a Hollywood remake, titled Speak No Evilwhich was criticized by Christian Tafdrupdirector responsible for the original production, made in Denmark and released in 2022.

It is worth remembering how the new version changes the nationality of the two families: instead of being British, they are American. One of the most criticized aspects of the remake was the complete change in the ending of the film. In an interview with culturethe filmmaker explained how he was not impressed with the film and gave it several negative reviews.

“I don’t know what it is about Americans, but they are raised to have a heroic story where good must triumph over evil, and this version of the film cultivates that,” he said. He then went on to comment on how the changes make the narrative “less dangerous.”

“I found that they made an extremely entertaining, effective and well-acted version of my original film. But it may not be as dangerous either,” he continued. “When I saw the film yesterday, I could see that they would never succeed with a film where the characters are stoned to death, as they are in our film. These people are supposed to fight for their families and defeat the bad guys.”

It’s kind of a happy ending, and it’s so deeply ingrained in their culture that the United States should be able to deal with all of this.

Finally, Christian Tafdrup reflected on the audience’s varying reactions to the remake: “People were completely enthused and applauded, laughed and screamed. It was like being at a rock concert.” In comparison, upon leaving the screening of Speak No Evilhe saw “people traumatized.”
