It was in 1941 that the Penguin character, Batman’s sworn enemy, first appeared in comics. Detective Comics 58.

Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot, from a wealthy aristocratic family, had a difficult childhood due to his unattractive physique, which caused him to be ridiculed and rejected by his classmates. To ensure the well-being of his family’s prestigious legacy, he decided to turn to organized crime and became the leader of one of Gotham City’s major gangs.

It was actor Burgess Meredith (best known for his beloved character in the Mickey Rock franchise) who first played the character in the Batman series and also in the 60s feature film.

But it was in 1992 that Danny DeVito, who had a strange experience on set, would forever leave his mark on this flagship character of the DC Comics universe with his masterful performance in Tim Burton’s second film.

He shares the bill with an equally prestigious cast, from Michelle Pfeiffer (Catwoman) to Christopher Walken (Max Shrek), including, of course, Michael Keaton as the Gotham vigilante.

Thirty years later, it was Colin Farrell who had the difficult task of succeeding this gothic version of the Penguin in Matt Reeves’ new adaptation, Batman. And it was the unrecognizable Colin Farrell, whom we were able to discover opposite Robert Pattinson two years ago, starting at the Iceberg Lounge nightclub.

The bet ultimately paid off for the actor, who is consequently reprising his role in spin-off mini-series The Penguin, which airs tomorrow on the new Max streaming platform. The series follows the rise of Oswald Cobblepot in the underworld of Gotham City.
