Janet Jackson Questions Kamala Harris’ Racial Identity: ‘They Said She’s Not Black’

The singer has exposed her doubts in a podcast, echoing conspiracy theories about the racial origins of the American vice president

Singer Janet Jackson has decided to discuss US Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity in an interview with The Guardian’s Weekend podcast. Discussing the 2024 presidential election, Jackson said she had “heard” that Harris was “not black, she’s Indian.” Michael Jackson’s sister added: “They said her father was white. I hadn’t watched the news for a few days, but that’s what they told me.”

Kamala Harris’s father, professor and economist Donald J. Harris, is black and Jamaican, while her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was Indian. The couple separated when Kamala and her sister Maya were young.

Uncertainties about the election of a black woman

Asked whether the United States would be ready to elect a black woman as president, Janet Jackson expressed hesitation. “I don’t really know,” she said. “I think it’s going to be chaos anyway.”

Controversy follows Donald Trump’s statements

Jackson’s comments reflect conspiracy theories and controversial statements by Donald Trump, who also questioned Kamala Harris’s racial identity during the National Association of Black Journalists convention in July. Trump said, “She’s always promoted her Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was black until a few years ago when she suddenly became black.”
