Astronauts on the International Space Station have a lot to do every day. But they also need time to rest. And there’s nothing better to do that than watching a TV series! What does the selection look like 400 kilometers from Earth? Hint: It’s heavy, very heavy!
In 2016, Gizmodo filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with NASA to find out what movies and TV shows were available on the ISS. The list was a fascinating little glimpse into the lives of astronauts when they have free time. The site recently decided to send a new request to find out what new movies and series will appear there.
The series list was published last August and there are new features in the program – but not only that! Of course, there are space-themed series like Hulu’s The First with Sean Penn, the critically acclaimed alternate history drama For All Mankind, and the comedy Space Force. Other series include the popular Yellowstone, The Handmaid’s Tale and Better Call Saul.
And then, surprisingly, there is our national and proud Kaamelott, as well as Le Bureau, the lesser-known French version of The Office!
On the sci-fi side, we find Andor, Star Trek: Discovery, Firefly and Battlestar Galactica, among others. But there are also many very “down-to-earth” cult sitcoms like Friends, How I Met Your Mother, officeThe Big Bang Theory or even Young Sheldon. Astronauts can also watch HBO series such as Succession, Westworld, True Detective, Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
ISS also offers Apple series such as Ted Lasso or Severance, Netflix series such as Stranger Things, Lady’s Game or The Crown, Disney+ series such as Loki or The Book of Boba Fett, and Prime Video series such as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. . In general, most broadcast seasons are available, although there are exceptions.
The list also includes cooking shows and documentaries such as When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions (2008), From the Earth to the Moon (1998) and Last days of World War II (2005).
